What do you do when you feel homesick, unwell, or need to take your medication? Visit our Clinic, which has been lovingly run by our Camp Nurse Miss Claudia for over six years. To introduce you to Miss Claudia and what makes our Clinic so special, we asked her a few questions about who she is, how well-equipped the Clinic is, and what campers and parents should prepare for in the months leading up to camp.
Background and Experience
Miss Claudia became a Nurse later in life, after her children were grown. She graduated in her 40s after traveling the world as a Navy wife and is now a mother, grandmother, and devoted Camp Nurse. She shares, "Camp saved my life as a little kid. I started going when I was eight years old, and I always kept in touch with friends and alumnae. Being a Camp Nurse was always my goal. I love the campers and want them to be safe. I'm always around and always there for them, whether they have a booboo or need a comforting talk. My cabin is always open."
"I can't wait to welcome all the campers back and see new faces as well! This summer will be full of unforgettable adventures and the beginning of lifelong friendships. I'm here to ensure each camper feels safe, supported, and ready to embrace every moment. Let’s make it a great summer!" -Nurse Claudia
Health and Safety Protocols
Miss Claudia meticulously manages all camper medications, including over-the-counter ones. They are kept secure, and she distributes them as needed. "I handle a lot of first aid, from bee stings and splinters to cuts," she says. She advises campers not to run around camp because of the tripping hazards. She's present in the dining hall to ensure every camper gets enough to eat and that the Chef is aware of any religious or allergy restrictions. She believes it's extremely important that all staff be aware of campers' allergies.
Common Concerns
For campers who feel homesick or lonely, Miss Claudia is always available. "I've spent many years talking with young people, diverting their attention from negativity, and making them feel special. If they have a scrape or a cut, I attend to it and follow up afterward. I'm really good at removing splinters, and I understand that kids can be fearful about it. That's why I'm gentle, and I always suggest they have a buddy with them when I remove a splinter. Whether it's a splinter, scrape or a cut, I'm very aware of germs and make sure infections are avoided at all costs."
Emergency Preparedness
The Clinic is equipped with essential life-saving instruments like AEDs, EpiPens, and Narcan. The staff is trained in CPR and wilderness first aid, and Miss Claudia herself is certified in advanced CPR and wilderness first aid. "We have telephone coverage with Emergency Medical Technicians, and we carry radios so we can respond quickly when if someone gets hurt on the campground. The hospital is close by, and if we need to take a camper out of camp, we bring their medications, emergency contacts, and permission to treat documentation. Parents are contacted immediately."
Advice for Campers and Parents
Miss Claudia is excited to work with the new Camp Director and emphasizes, "As a Camp Director and Nurse, we have one goal in mind: camper safety and happiness. "For a safe and happy camp experience, it's crucial for Miss Claudia to know the campers' medications and allergies. "If they take any medications, they should come with the camper and be authorized by a doctor. Proper labeling is important, too. We use sunscreen and bug spray to minimize mosquito bites, and campers can come to me for education and supplies if they start their period while at camp."
